Build software that costs less to run and lasts longer.

We advise, design, build, and modernize software around real needs, lowering lifetime cost and resource use while reducing security exposure and unnecessary complexity.

When software starts working against the business.

These situations often appear separately. In practice, they usually point to the same underlying issue: the system, its cost, and the organization have drifted out of alignment.

  1. Operating costs keep rising.

Cloud, licensing, and support costs grow faster than usage, with no single obvious cause. When the cloud estate itself is the cause, that work has its own practice: CloudLift.

  2. Change has become risky.

Teams avoid touching critical areas because impact is unclear and ownership is fragmented.

  3. Modernization is necessary, but the path is unclear.

Rewrite, migrate, or improve in place? The sequence of decisions matters more than the label.

  4. A new system needs sound foundations.

Early choices will shape delivery speed, operating cost, and changeability for years.

  5. The technology stack carries more complexity than the problem requires.

Individually reasonable choices have accumulated into unnecessary operational and cognitive load.

  6. A critical decision needs an independent view.

Before committing to a platform, vendor, migration, or architecture, leadership needs a defensible second opinion. That opinion is deliberately not ours to sell: it is ClarusTech, the independent review practice.

Full scope

Cost and resource efficiency are design constraints, not add-ons.

Efficient software uses fewer computing resources, costs less to operate, and reduces environmental impact. We consider efficiency from the first architectural decision, not as a separate optimization phase.

  1. Choose technology based on actual need
  2. Reduce infrastructure and operational cost
  3. Introduce distributed systems only when justified
  4. Minimize dependencies and supply-chain exposure
  5. Avoid lock-in and preventable migrations
  6. Design for efficient, durable operation

What guides our decisions.

Needs before technology
Start with the business need, constraints, and expected lifetime, not a preferred tool.
Measure delivery, operations, support, and future change together
A cheaper build that raises operating and support cost for years is not cheaper.
Prefer standards with predictable support and migration paths
A newer option should provide a measurable lifecycle advantage, not only short-term developer convenience.
Introduce dependencies deliberately and isolate critical ones
Every dependency adds maintenance, security, and supply-chain exposure. The ones that cannot be avoided belong behind a clear boundary.
Efficiency by design
Reduce unnecessary computing, storage, network traffic, and operational overhead from the start.
Plan incremental replacement before considering a rewrite
Replacing a system in stages keeps it releasable throughout. A rewrite gives that up on the first day.

Understand, decide, design, build, improve.

  1. Understand

Understand the business, the system, its constraints, and its true cost.

  2. Decide

Determine what should change, what should remain, and what should happen first.

  3. Design

Define appropriate boundaries, technologies, interfaces, and migration paths.

  4. Build

Deliver production-quality software aligned with the decisions and constraints.

  5. Improve

Measure cost, performance, security, reliability, and maintainability.

We can support one stage or all five. Most engagements begin with understanding and end when the internal team can carry the work forward.

Senior-led from decision to delivery.

StratusWorks is an architecture and engineering practice for organizations making consequential software decisions. Engagements remain directly led by experienced engineers, from initial assessment through implementation and ownership transfer.

Incremental modernization
Reworked a tightly coupled application into explicit modules, allowing critical areas to change independently without committing to a full rewrite.
Platform architecture
Defined system boundaries, integrations, deployment architecture, and delivery foundations for a new business-critical platform.
Cost and complexity reduction
Identified infrastructure and architecture choices creating recurring expense without corresponding product value.

Common questions, answered.

What does StratusWorks do?

StratusWorks is a software architecture and engineering consultancy. We advise on consequential technical decisions, build production systems designed for long-term ownership, and modernize existing ones so they cost less to run and stay changeable.

When is a full rewrite justified?

Rarely, and only after staged replacement has been priced honestly. A rewrite gives up releasability on its first day; incremental replacement keeps the system shipping while it changes, which is why we plan it first.

How do you keep operating costs down?

By treating cost and resource efficiency as design constraints from the first decision, not as a separate optimization phase. Technology is chosen for the actual need, distribution is introduced only when justified, and every dependency has to earn its place.

Do you replace internal teams?

No. Engagements are senior-led and end with ownership transfer: your team carries the system forward, with the reasoning documented rather than locked in our heads.

How does an engagement start?

With a short conversation about the system and the decision in front of you. From there we identify the first decision that matters and scope the engagement around it, from a single stage to the full lifecycle.

Do you work remotely, and in which time zones?

Yes. We work remotely across the EU and North America, with reliable overlap for European hours and East Coast mornings.

Can you take over an existing system?

Yes, deliberately: we start by understanding it and making change safe, then modernize in reversible steps. Taking ownership without a rewrite is most of what Modernize and Optimize exists for.

What does an engagement cost?

Scope, duration, and fee are agreed before work begins, based on the decision at hand and the systems in scope. You always know the price before you commit, and a single-stage engagement is a normal way to start.

Specialist practices on the same standard.

Two focused practices carry this engineering standard into their own fields. CloudLift reads cloud estates the way an architect reads a system. ClarusTech reviews consequential decisions with no stake in the implementation. Both are available today.
